The Abia state Executive Council (SEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), is demanding for the immediate withdrawal of the termination letters issued to over 200 staff of the institution last week by the management.

The Management of Abia Polytechnic, Aba had announced  the sack of some of its staff, citing “verification” as reason for the action.

The press statement of the institution gives reason for the ” provocative action ” which reads in part:  that “Due to the commencement of the review report on verification of staff and their certificates as approved by state EXCO in April 2019.

“Following painstaking verification and reviews, letters have been issued to 258 staff members whose services are no longer required by the institution.

All affected staff are receiving full severance payment in line with their conditions of service with the school.

They will also receive due outstanding salaries as workers are being paid.”

Abia poly as it popularly known has been enmeshed in salary crisis with the staff owed about 16 months arrears while the state government constantly dissociates self from their predicament.

Rising from a meeting, SEC views the presence of security operatives in the institution as “an act of invasion of the serene academic environment and strongly views it as an act of aggression, intimidation, molestation of workers who are owed 16 months arrears of salaries.”

The body further demands for the immediate withdrawal of the armed personnel from the institution whose persistent shooting in the air threatens the lives and safety of workers and students alike.

The NLC further considers the action of the management which totally ignored the letter of the SEC to stay action until after their interface with concerned parties.
