ABIA GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATES TO SLUG IT OUT AT DEBATE.
Chinwe Ugele, Umuahia.
After exhaustively and successfully holding the House of Representatives debate for candidates of some political parties vying for seats in various federal constituencies, the organisers of the programme, “Abia State Election Debate Team” say all is now set for the governorship candidates to go head to head on issues.
Chairman of the team, Mr. Emenike Iroegbu told newsmen that five candidates of five political parties have indicated interest to participate in the debate scheduled to hold on Tuesday the 22nd of January, 2019 at the Abia Hotels in Umuahia.
He said modalities for the exercise have also been stipulated and communicated to the parties which must ensure strict compliance of the set rules.
He said the debate for the House of Representatives candidates was successful going by the feedbacks the team got from the citizens who might have for the first time heard directly from those seeking office to represent them.
Accordinbg to Mr. Iroegbu, “The essence of the debate is to present the electorate with the choice to understand the caliber of persons contesting elections for different positions and hear their policies and thereafter make informed choices at the polls.”
He said it is an opportunity for the candidates to boldly speak to the masses and also seek clarifications on government’s programmes where one is not clear, adding that “they should not shy away from the debate for whatever reason.”
He however stated that no candidate is coerced to participate in the debate as only those that signaled they were interested, were shortlisted.
Just like the debate for the HOR candidates were aired live on Flo FM, Buzz FM, Vision Africa and streamed online on their affiliate platforms, that of the governorship candidates will also tow the same path.
The organisers have also informed the security agencies in the state about the forth-coming programme and assured that only those with official invites will be allowed into the venue.
The parties to participate are.
Accord Party (AP)
All Progressives Congress (APC).
All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The chairman finally urged the citizens to participate fully by following the programme live, assuring the parties also that everyone will have equal opportunities to answer questions thrown at them.
