NIGERIA DECIDES: SDP LG CHAIRMEN IN ABIA STATE ADOPT PDP’s CANDIDATE FOR MARCH 9 GUBERNATORIAL POLL.
Chinwe Ugele, Umuahia.
Against the wish of the party and in what seems like an anti party activity, some members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in Abia state under the aegis of Local Government Chairmen of SDP have openly adopt the candidature of incumbent governor Okezie Ikpeazu who is the flag bearer of the People’s Democratic party in the state.
The leader of the group who doubles as the chairman of Isiala Ngwa North SDP, Chief Chijioke Ozems, said he led the 17 LG party Chairmen to announce their support for Ikpeazu based on equity and peace.
He said they realized that all the people who governed the state from the other two zones, did two tenures, saying it will be fair to give the incumbent another opportunity to complete two terms.
He failed to answer questions on the position of the party EXCO on such a position knowing that the SDP also has its own governorship candidate in the person of Mrs. Blessing Nwagba.
According to Ozems, “we are not saying Blessing is not capable, or that SDP is not good, we only want Okzie to go back for a second tenure.”
The state Organising Secretary of the party explained that the party was adopting the PDP gubernatorial candidate and not members for House of Assembly, saying they have better candidates at that level than the ruling party.
Several calls put across the state SDP Chairman, Chief Chidi Nwosu and the governorship candidate of the party were not answered.
