Nigeria Decides: Abia REC extends voting time

Following the outcry by eligible voters in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia state over the late commencement of accreditation and voting in almost all the polling units in the area, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr. Joseph Iloh has directed that every voter who showed up at the polling units must be allowed to exercise his or her franchise.
Across the local government, election materials arrived hours after the exercise began in most units in other parts if the state.
No unit started voting before noon, leaving voters stranded and angry.
In some places, the materials arrived as late as past 2pm while in others there were mix ups of result sheets which the REC said was sorted out .
However, some units urban ward one like the Urban Nursery and primary school units as at 3pm had not begun accreditation as a result of the anguish of the voters who complained bitterly about the late arrival of materials.
Materials meant for Ndume area were also “erroneously sent to a different ward leading to non conduct of the exercise up until 5pm.
The REC has said he would communicate with the headquarters Abuja to get further directives on the matter.
He appealed to the electorate to continue with voting as no one will be disenfranchised.
Currently voting is still going on in almost all units across the state.
