2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS: INEC LIFTS BAN ON CAMPAIGNS.
The Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the resumption of campaigns by political parties and their candidates.
The campaigns are however expected to end by midnight Thursday, the 21st of February, 2019, twenty four hours before the presidential and National Assembly elections.
Campaigns had ended on the 14th of February when the presidential and National Assembly elections were to hold on the 16th.
The commission in statement signed by the National commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the decision was reached after due consultations with political parties.
The statement further approved for media outfits to accept and publish or broadcast and circulate campaign materials up till midnight of Thursday, adding that political parties and their candidates are enjoined to abide by the extant laws governing campaigns.
INEC also thanked the citizens for their show of understanding regarding the rescheduling of the elections and appealed to the stakeholders to be dispassionate and circumspect in their comments.
The statement further contained a fresh assurance that the commission has worked out in detail concrete steps to be taken to ensure that election materials arrive at polling units in good time for prompt commencement of the polls on the 23rd February, 2019.
