APPEAL COURT CONVICTS SUBEB CHAIRMAN ; SENTENCES HIM TO 41 YRS IN JAIL.
Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto has sentenced the Chairman of the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (ZSUBEB), Murtala Adamu Jengebe to a cumulative jail term of 41 years.
The court presided over by Justice Hannatu Sankey
set aside the judgment of the lower court which acquitted Jengebe of the charges brought against him by the Economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC).
His conviction came after the appellate court found him guilty on the seven out of the 10 counts charges for which he was earlier acquitted at the Federal High Court, Gusau, Zamfara State.
In the judgment by a 5 man panel, read by Justice Habeeb Abiru, the court held that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt 7 out of the 10 count charges of money laundering.
The Appeal court went ahead to sentence him to 5 years imprisonment on each of four of the counts and seven years each on three other counts respectively.
The Court however declared that the sentences shall run concurrently.
On the 12th day of May 2017, the Federal High Court sitting in Gusau presided over by Justice Z.B Abubakar discharged and acquitted the Jengebe on the 10 counts charge of Money Laundering but convicted him for engaging in private business while he was still in public service which was an offence he was never charged for by the Commission.
