HOW A COUPLE MALTREATED A 9 YR OLD RELATIVE

The couple, Mr.&Mrs. Ndukwe Okeocha of Item in Bende local government Area of Abia state is now telling the criminal Investigation department of the Nigeria police force in Abia state how a 9 year old Miracle Jerry, a ward kept in their custody and care sustained several injuries on her body.

Little Miracle was saved after neighbours in their neighbourhood at World bank Housing estate Umuahia, alerted relevant authorities on her plight.

On further inquiries it was learnt that Miracle came to live with her aunt,( mum’s younger sister) about a year ago and only attended school for one term since then, staying home to do house chores and receive floggings.

She said she earned the beatings and injuries for allegedly telling lies and stealing from her guardians as they claimed.
But for the timely intervention of the International federation of women lawyers,(FIDA) there might have been more injuries.

The chairman of FIDA in Abia state, Barr. Chidinma Alozie condemned the trend which she said is on the rise in recent time in the state. She said the organization has the mandate to
protect women, girl-child and indigent ones.

According to her, FIDA is determined to take the fight to the last to ensure justice is served to the victims.
In her contribution on the matter, the Abia state coordinator, legal Aid Council, Barr. Martha Egwu frowned at the manner minors are presently being harassed and abused by relatives.
She said it will no longer be business as usual for all those who instead of catering for the girls kept in their care, torment and hurt them physically and mentally.

Meanwhile, the two groups have urged parents to limit the number of children they have to guarantee their safety, welfare and adequate education and solicited the assistance of the state government to enable them confront most of the challenges they encounter in the state.

The couple will soon be arraigned in court.
