EMENIKE DRAGS NWANKPA TO COURT FOR DEFAMATION: CLAIMS N1B DAMAGES.
Chinwe Ugele, Umuahia.
The crises rocking the All Progressives Congress seem far from being over with a new dimension as a chieftain of the party, Ikechi Emenike has slammed Hon. Donatus Nwankpa with a defamation suit of N1b.
In the Suit No., HOH/47/2018, Emenike is demanding from Nwankpa the sum of 1 billion naira as “general damages for slander”.
Joined in the suit lodged at the Ohafia High court is the Umuahia based radio station where Nwankpa allegedly made the said slanderous statements.
In the suit, Emenike who is one of the gubernatorial candidates whose nomination is in contention in APC is alleging that Nwankpa in a radio program alleged that he (Emenike) and Justice Collinton Okoroafor of the state high court at Okpuala Ngwa worshipped in the same church in Abuja, and shortly after the judge gave an interlocutory order sacking Nwankpa’s executive and ruling that the APC executive being led by Dr Emmanuel Ndukwe is the authentic one.
Emenike further claimed in the suit that the comments by Nwankpa have caused him enormous embarrassment and belittled his reputation before his friends and associates, as well as foreigners.
He said that he did not know the Judge in person, never met him other than reading his name from court papers brought to him by his lawyers and from newspapers that covered proceedings in his (Justice Okoroafor’s) Court.
The plaintiff stated that he recorded the said program on tape where the slanderous statement was made and will tender it during the trial proper.
He is also praying the Court to grant him a “perpetual injunction restraining the 1st defendant (Nwankpa) from further uttering the said slanderous words about or concerning (him)the plaintiff”.
Emenike is also demanding from Nwankpa, “a written apology, copies of which he shall publish in at least three national newspapers”.
No date has been fixed for hearing on the matter.
